Joe Thomas spent 11 seasons protecting quarterbacks for the Cleveland Browns and built a Hall of Fame career despite the team’s long struggle to win. Years after leaving the NFL Thomas has shared one painful memory that has deeply affected him. It came during a game against Tom Brady and the New England Patriots, when Thomas felt he had done his job at the highest level. The Browns still lost by 30 points. The game came during Thomas’ 10th season in Cleveland. By then, he had already spent years trying to convince himself that the Browns could become a Super Bowl team.
Thomas explained that mindset while appearing on Bussin’ With The Boys. He said, “The way I entered every season was like, if I need to get the most out of myself, I’ve got to convince myself this is a Super Bowl roster.”
That belief helped Thomas push himself through training, practice and film study. But the team’s direction was becoming harder to ignore.
Cleveland was rebuilding with players being moved while the team looked toward the future. Thomas said he could sense that the Browns were not ready to compete.
Then came the Patriots game.
Thomas said he strongly disliked Brady and wanted to beat him badly. Instead, Cleveland suffered a 30-0 loss.
“I played a perfect game, and we lost by 30,” Thomas recalled telling his wife.

Joe Thomas’ individual success came during years of Browns struggles
Thomas finished his career with 10 Pro Bowl selections and six first-team All-Pro honors. He was also named to the NFL’s All-2010s Team and later entered the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
But his Browns career had very little team success.
Cleveland posted only one winning season during his 11 years with the franchise. That came in his rookie season when the Browns finished 10-6. His final three seasons were far more difficult ending.
The contrast explains why the Patriots loss stayed with him.
