The Philadelphia 76ers have great expectations for their redesigned roster as they get ready for the 2026-27 NBA season. But in the first few weeks, the team might be careful with star center Joel Embiid and LeBron James, possibly cutting back on their playing time to manage their workloads. As the club seeks to develop chemistry and create consistency early in the season, their availability and conditioning may have a significant impact on how quickly Philadelphia finds its groove.
LeBron James and Joel Embiid Face Minutes Restrictions
The Philadelphia 76ers will restrict LeBron James and Joel Embiid’s game time to about 30 minutes per game to begin the season, according to Shams Charania of ESPN. He pointed out that in order for the team to perform as they desire, all of Philadelphia’s stars will have to make sacrifices.
“My understanding is Lebron James, Joel Embiid the hope is within the first few weeks of the season limit them to around 30 minutes a game. I have to say it: There’s gonna be sacrifice”, Charania said on The Pat McAfee Show.
Meanwhile, at 7 p.m. ET, the Philadelphia 76ers will play their first match of the 2026-27 season against the reigning NBA champion New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden. During the event, it is also expected that LeBron James will play his first game as a member of the Sixers while the Knicks will be having their ceremony for the rings and the banner they will be hoisting.
Additionally, it will be a crucial rematch between the two clubs from the previous postseason. The Knicks won their first championship in 53 years after sweeping the Sixers in the second round of the 2026 NBA Playoffs. This was one of the most dominant title runs in history.
Joel Embiid’s Past Frustrations With Minute Restrictions Resurface After Uneven Start to the Season
This isn’t the first time Joel Embiid was put on a restriction. A 20-minute restriction was imposed on Embiid as a precautionary measure while he recovered from knee surgery and a protracted absence from professional basketball, which Embiid publicly denounced for interfering with his conditioning and playing rhythm. The former MVP stated that the brief bursts of playing time are trying his patience despite his effective performance.
“I’d rather not have minute restrictions, but I’d rather get it out of the way,” Embiid said at that time. “The longer I sit, the shorter stints — you don’t get in a rhythm. You play two, three minutes, and you’ve got to get out. Two or three up-and-downs? That’s literally nothing. I might as well stay home with my family.”
Embiid reached his limit early in the fourth quarter of their previous season-opening game against Boston, scoring just four points on 1-for-9 shooting. He was much more at ease against Charlotte, though, making 7 of 11 shots and blasting three triples before departing in the middle of the third quarter.
