The number of deaths from a major earthquake in Myanmar has risen to 2,056, the ruling junta said on Monday. A statement from a junta spokesperson said 3,900 people were injured and 270 were still missing, three days after Friday’s shallow 7.7-magnitude quake left a trail of destruction in the country.
National flags will fly at half-mast until April 6 “in sympathy for the loss of life and damages” from the quake, the junta said earlier in the day.
In Thailand’s Bangkok, at least 18 people have died after a skyscraper crumbled when the earthquake in Myanmar rattled several neighbouring countries. The government has announced an investigation into the cause of the collapse of the tower, which was being built by a Chinese company and a long-established Thai construction firm.
