The 34-year-old Democrat born to Indian and Ugandan immigrants is now set to become the first Muslim mayor of the Big Apple, besides etching his name in history as the first African-born and of South Asian heritage to hold the prestigious post, besides being the youngest in more than a century when he takes office on January 1.

Mamdani defeated former New York Governor and independent Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa. Local elections across the US, too, are seeing a blue wave.
In his first social media post after major media outlets declared him the winner, Mamadani shared a video from the City Hall station, with a banner text reading, “Zohran For New York City.”
