Out-of-form India vice-captain Shubman Gill has been ruled out of the last two T20I games against South Africa with a toe injury, sources close to the team told PTI. It is learnt that Gill has sustained the injury during training session and all precautionary measures are being taken to ensure his speedy recovery. Sanju Samson is likely to play as an opener in Gill’s place. This is second serious injury for Shubman Gill in a short span of time. The Indian Test and ODI captain sustained a serious neck injury during the first Test against South Africa in Kolkata in mid-November. (India vs South Africa 4th T20I Live Updates)
He was immediately taken off the field and admitted to Woodlands Hospital, where he was kept under observation. The injury forced Gill to miss the remainder of the match and ruled him out of the second Test, which began on November 22 in Guwahati. He also missed the ODI series.
Gill’s earlier injury wasn’t limited to neck spasm and requireed extensive rest, prompting the team management to avoid any risk of rushing him back. “Gill has been given an injection to alleviate his symptoms and will need a period of rest before starting rehab, training and skill work,” the BCCI source said, as reported by PTI.
After having recovered from the nasty neck injury, Shubman Gill said he felt good ahead of his comeback in the T20 International series against South Africa after undergoing extensive rehabilitation at the Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru. The Center of Excellence cleared Gill to play in the five-match series.
“I’m feeling much better. I think the day that I came here, from that day till today, I’ve had quite a bit of skill sessions and some training sessions. So, I feel much, much better,” Gill had told ‘bcci.tv’ on December 8.
