France secured their place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 quarter-finals after a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Paraguay at the Philadelphia Stadium on Saturday. Kylian Mbappé converted from the penalty spot in the second half to finally break down Paraguay’s stubborn resistance, sending Didier Deschamps’ side into a last-eight meeting with Morocco.
Les Bleus dominated possession from the opening whistle, controlling nearly 80 per cent of the ball as Paraguay sat deep in a compact defensive shape. France repeatedly threatened through Ousmane Dembélé, Bradley Barcola and Mbappé, but goalkeeper Orlando Gill and Paraguay’s disciplined backline frustrated the favourites throughout the opening 45 minutes, which ended goalless.
Deschamps’ introduction of Désiré Doué shortly after the hour mark proved decisive. The substitute immediately stretched Paraguay’s defence with his direct running before going down inside the penalty area following a challenge from Diego Gómez. After initially waving play on, referee Ilgiz Tantashev overturned his decision following a VAR review and pointed to the spot.
Mbappé stepped up in the 70th minute and calmly sent Gill the wrong way to score the only goal of the contest. Paraguay pushed forward in the closing stages, but France remained composed defensively, while Gill produced two outstanding late saves to deny Mbappé a second goal.
The victory also carried significant milestones for the France captain. Mbappé’s seventh goal of the tournament drew him level with Lionel Messi in the Golden Boot race, although the Frenchman currently leads the standings on assists. The strike was also his 19th FIFA World Cup goal, leaving him just one behind Messi’s all-time record of 20.
France will now face Morocco in the quarter-finals on July 9 in Boston after the Atlas Lions defeated Canada 3-0 earlier in the day.
