Travis Kelce’s 14th NFL season carries a different weight. The Kansas City Chiefs star has already reached the stage of his career where every game can feel like part of a closing chapter. Now, with Taylor Swift by his side as his wife and Patrick Mahomes back from injury, Kelce has another chance to reshape the ending. The veteran tight end has not confirmed that retirement is coming after the 2026 season, but reports suggest his decision could depend on his health, his form and how far the Chiefs go. For Kelce, one more Super Bowl would make the story almost perfect.
Travis Kelce weighs a possible final NFL season
Kelce’s return was not simply about adding another year to an already remarkable career. The 36-year-old reportedly wanted to erase the memory of a disappointing 2025 campaign, when Kansas City finished 6-11 and missed the playoffs.
His own performances also left him frustrated. After years of dominating opposing defenses, Kelce struggled at times and made costly mistakes. The injury to Mahomes made the season even harder to swallow.
That appears to have changed his approach. Rather than treating 2026 as an obligation, Kelce is reportedly viewing it as an opportunity to enjoy football while he still can. “Travis is leaning into this year with so much more of an open mind and perspective because the rest of his life is set in stone,” an insider told the Daily Mail.
The veteran tight end has also received fresh speculation about retirement after former NFL star Cris Carter described his preparations as “THE LAST DANCE” and referenced a potential trip to Canton.
Still, Kelce has not publicly announced that this will be his final season. His decision may come later, once he sees how his body and the Chiefs hold up.
Taylor Swift marriage and family plans add a new chapter
Kelce’s personal life has changed dramatically since his previous NFL season. He and Swift reportedly married on July 3 in New York, giving the star a major new priority away from football. The couple’s future has also fueled talk about starting a family. However, reports indicate Swift does not want to force Kelce into retirement simply because she hopes to have children.
“Taylor is eager to start a family. As much as one would think that Travis would have to be home for that – and yes, he would – she never wants to pressure him to retire,” the source close to the couple revealed.
That leaves Kelce with room to make the decision himself. He has already built a career that could lead to television, film and broadcasting after football.
But there is one prize he may still want. With Mahomes returning, Kelce has a genuine chance to chase another Super Bowl. If that happens, retirement could arrive on his own terms, with the perfect final chapter waiting beyond the field.
