Getting invited to a celebrity wedding sounds like the kind of message you would open right away. But not for Mike Gesicki. The Cincinnati Bengals tight end admitted that he thought the digital invite was fake and left it unanswered for six weeks. It took someone reaching out to ask for his response before he realized he needed to reply. That small mistake nearly cost him and his wife, Halle, a chance to attend one of 2026’s biggest celebrity weddings.
Why Mike Gesicki thought Travis Kelce’s wedding invite was a prank
Gesicki shared the story during an October 9 appearance on Bengals Weekly, where team play-by-play announcer Dan Hoard asked him about attending Kelce and Taylor Swift’s July 3 wedding at New York City’s Madison Square Garden.
“I didn’t answer for like six weeks,” Gesicki said, explaining that he had assumed the invitation was not genuine. A follow-up call finally got him to check the message and send a response.
The invitation came as a surprise because Gesicki and Kelce were not close. The two NFL tight ends knew each other through Tight End University, with the annual gathering Kelce co-hosts with George Kittle and Greg Olsen. They were not close friends, but Kelce invited Gesicki and his wife to the wedding. Looking back, Gesicki was glad he had answered in time. He described the wedding as a “really, really, really cool experience” and thanked Kelce for allowing the couple to be there.
Taylor Swift’s music made the wedding even more special for Gesicki
For Gesicki, the invitation meant more than attending a party filled with famous names. He grew up listening to Taylor Swift, partly because his two older sisters were fans of her music. Meeting the singer at her wedding was something his younger self could never have pictured.
“When you’re 10 years old, and you’re listening to music on the radio, you never think, ‘Oh yeah, I’m going to be at that person’s wedding,’” he told Hoard.
The Bengals tight end also found himself watching the guests as much as enjoying the celebration. With so many familiar faces from music, sports and Hollywood in one place, he admitted that he caught himself “aggressively people watching.”
Gesicki had met Swift before, too. She made a surprise appearance at Tight End University in Nashville in June 2025, where she performed her hit “Shake It Off.” His wife had missed that event after canceling her visit at the last minute.
