When he intends to leave the NBA, Kyrie Irving has shared his thoughts on the rest of his basketball career. The Dallas Mavericks great is still a huge force in the game because of his outstanding ball handling, scoring prowess, and championship experience. However, every seasoned player will eventually have to consider retirement due to the growing demands of professional basketball.
Kyrie Irving Opens Up on NBA’s Changing Culture and His Retirement Timeline
Kyrie Irving does not envision himself continuing to play in the NBA far into his 40s, in contrast to his former teammate LeBron James. He pointed out that social media and gambling have transformed the game from what he loved as a child.
“You have social media and gambling which is running rampant and it’s not the same NBA that I fell in love with as a kid and I’m very much aware of that. And I don’t say that as a negative thing,” Irving, who turns 36 in the summer of 2028, stated.
He further said, “Basketball is an eternal flame. In terms of the NBA schedule and things of that nature, you have to really be in love with that, too. The weight lifting. The unseen hours. The media prep. Just going in and being ready to play at a high level.”
As long as he enjoys being in the NBA, he intends to keep playing. Irving stated that instead of going on a conventional farewell tour, he will probably surprise fans when the time comes by announcing it publicly. He has a $42.4 million player option for the 2027-2028 season under his contract with the Dallas Mavericks.
Kyrie Irving’s Role in Dallas Mavericks Explained
The Dallas Mavericks’ intentions for the 2026–27 NBA season are still heavily reliant on Kyrie Irving. Irving averaged 24.7 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 4.6 assists in 50 games prior to tearing his left ACL in March 2025. With his return, Dallas now has a seasoned scorer who can lead, and create his own shots.
Irving’s responsibilities go beyond just scoring to include leadership and helping Dallas’ younger players grow. He assumed a quasi-coaching position during his recuperation, assisting Flagg. After considering his career throughout his break, Irving has also placed a strong emphasis on communication. Although the Mavericks will need to carefully control his workload as he recovers from a serious knee injury, his relationship with Flagg might become a defining factor for the club.
